Subject: First record of Thrips leeuweni (or similar species) for the U.S.
Date posted: November 13, 2001
Source: USDA
Three specimens of a Thrips sp. near leeuweni were intercepted in a flower lei from Hilo, Hawaii in California on Oct 17, 2001. This collection represents a new record for Hawaii and the US. Two similar specimens were previously intercepted on Gardenia sp. from American Samoa (1979) and on Strongylodon sp. from Tahiti (1986). The five examined specimens agree with the description of T. leeuweni except for the coloration of the antenna and one anatomical character.
