On October 27, 2025, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed the presence of Asiatic brown rot (Monilinia polystroma) in apple (Malus spp.) at a single site in the Montérégie region of Quebec. Since the initial find, additional detections of Asiatic brown rot have been confirmed at three other locations in the same area. Regulatory control measures were put in place based on risk of human-assisted spread. The CFIA is planning a national survey in 2026 to determine the extent of the organism’s distribution.

This is the first detection of Asiatic brown rot in Canada. It is currently a regulated pest for Canada.

Following International Plant Protection Convention principles and the International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures 8 - Determination of pest status in an area, Asiatic brown rot in Canada is considered present: not widely distributed and under official control. The CFIA is reviewing the regulatory status of this organism, given its limited potential impact and weak competitiveness compared to other widespread Monilinia species.

Le 27 octobre 2025, l’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments (ACIA) a confirmé la présence de la pourriture brune asiatique (Monilinia polystroma) sur des pommes (Malus spp.) dans un seul site de la région de la Montérégie, au Québec. Depuis cette première détection, d’autres cas de pourriture brune asiatique ont été confirmés dans trois autres sites de la même région. Des mesures de contrôle réglementaires ont été mises en place là où il existe un risque de propagation par l’activité humaine. L’ACIA prévoit réaliser une enquête nationale en 2026 pour déterminer l’étendue de la distribution de l’organisme.

Il s’agit de la première détection de la pourriture brune asiatique au Canada. Cet organisme est actuellement réglementé au Canada.

Conformément aux principes de la Convention internationale pour la protection des végétaux et à la Norme internationale pour les mesures phytosanitaires no 8 – Détermination de la situation d’un organisme nuisible dans une zone, la pourriture brune asiatique est considérée comme présente: non largement disséminée et faisant l’objet d’une lutte officielle au Canada. L’ACIA examine le statut réglementaire de cet organisme, compte tenu de son impact potentiel limité et de sa faible compétitivité par rapport à d’autres espèces de Monilinia largement répandues.
